Affogato al Caffè

Italy’s Most Effortless Indulgence

Some desserts are fussy. The affogato is not. Born in Italy, its name literally means “drowned” - and that’s exactly what happens when a shot of hot espresso is poured over a scoop of creamy gelato. Originally served as a quick post-meal pick-me-up in cafés, the affogato has become a worldwide favorite for the way it straddles two worlds: dessert and digestif, sweet treat and caffeine kick. Simple, dramatic, and a little bit indulgent, it’s proof that sometimes the best things need only two ingredients.

Classic Affogato Recipe

  • 1 scoop high-quality vanilla gelato (or ice cream in a pinch)

  • 1 shot of hot espresso (about 1 oz) or very strong coffee, freshly brewed

Scoop gelato into a small glass, bowl or cup. Pour the espresso directly over the top and serve immediately with a spoon.

Optional upgrades: drizzle of chocolate or coffee liqueur, a sprinkle of crushed amaretti, or a splash of bourbon for a boozy twist. Saluti!
