The best way to get motivated to update your outdoor space is to plan a party. It gives you something to work toward. Look over your deck and yard with a truly critical eye, then jump right in. An hour here and there can really add up.
- Clear it out: Have lawn tools, garbage cans or broken toys become part of the scenery? Get rid of them or store them away in the garage or garden shed.
- Clean it up: Trim, weed, edge, prune, paint and repair.
- Claim your space: Create a play spot for the kids. Outdoor dining should be accessible from the house- and near the grill. If you’ve got room, hang a hammock for an instant relaxation area.
- Define it: Use strategically placed potted trees, plants, outdoor curtains or folding screens to define the new “rooms”
- Extend yourself: continue your home’s style and color scheme outdoors. Add a pop color with bright cushions or piece of sculpture. Old patio furniture looks great painted in bright colors.
- Get comfortable: rugs, lamps, drapes, pillows and throws are all available in outdoor versions – and all price ranges. For a special party, pull your indoor dining table outside for the night. It looks incredible. (Don’t leave it out overnight- you never know when there might be an unexpected rain shower!)
- Lap of luxury: A patio heater or fireplace will warm up a chilly night. A fan will keep you cool (and the bugs don’t like the breeze). Soft lighting creates a dreamy mood.
- Don’t stop the music: Add outdoor speakers so you can enjoy a party playlist or mellow mood music.
