Tim Gunn’s coming to town!
“No woman needs to look dowdy or matronly — ever.”- Tim Gunn
Tim Gunn of Project Runway fame is coming to Cincinnati in January and I can’t wait! He’s part of the Smart Talk Connected Conversation series at the Aronoff. I love this annual series and this year is loaded with dynamic speakers I can’t wait to hear. I am going to spend the next month just trying to decide what to wear!
Tim’s latest project is “The Revolution”, a daily show all about health and lifestyle transformations. It’s due to premiere January 2012. Whether he’s working in fashion, running a fashion design school department, writing books and articles, appearing on television or supporting his charities, Tim Gunn always “makes it work”!
Want to see Tim when he’s in town? You can get your Smart Talk series tickets at a 20% discount by entering the promo code “SANTA”. If you follow SmartTalk on Twitter or Like them on Facebook and you will be entered to win a pair of tickets to the speaker of your choice .
I used a tip from Tim to pack for a trip to Italy. I knew I needed a great looking selection of versatile, hotel-sink -washable clothes in my suitcase. While I’ve never been one of those traveler’s in the dreaded “white sneakers and jeans”, Tim’s suggestion to pack a “sweatsuit alternative” was, from a travel fashion perspective, life changing! I found a great looking black zip-front jacket and boot-cut pant that, while athletic inspired, looked great with a bright shell underneath, swathed in a a bold scarf, under a blazer or with a simple t-shirt. I felt comfortable and put together on the plane, in museums, vineyards, markets and boutiques. I still wear a variation as part of my weekend errand -running wear.
Here are Tim’s Rules to Dress By, as featured in Redbook:
1. SILHOUETTE: “When getting dressed, think of your body as a series of thirds; the worst thing you can do is cut yourself in half. Pair a top that ends at your waist (one third) with long pants (two thirds), or wear a knee-length dress that goes no longer than the bottom of your kneecap.”
2. PROPORTION: “If you have something loose and blousy on top, whatever you wear below should be sleek and well fitted to serve as a counterpoint, and vice versa.”
3. FIT: “Most women wear clothes that are too big — that’s the comfort trap. Women don’t want to feel constrained, but I say, if you want to dress to feel as though you never got out of bed, then don’t.”
