This is not the story you think it is: A season of unlikely happiness
Sheila. That’s the name Laura Munson gave her inner critic. I love that! Going forward when I’m too tough on myself, I think I’ll say “Shut up Sheila!” Of course that’s not what we should do. We should really be gentle and forgiving of ourselves, not basing our happiness on things outside of our control.
That’s what Laura did in the face of a marriage crisis in which her husband of 20+ years told her he wanted out and she responded with “I don’t buy it.” The crisis truly tested her practice of living in the present, ending suffering and creating happiness. People have responded to her book,THIS IS NOT THE STORY YOU THINK IT IS: A Season of Unlikely Happiness with gratitude- grateful to no longer be going through similar problems alone, and to hear Laura’ story directly from the trenches.
Laura has learned to “Find joy in the creation, let go of the wanting.” This sentiment can be applied to everything, including parenting and ourselves. It makes one wonder, what if we released the idea of who we (or our kids) are “supposed” to be and celebrated who we are instead?
