StyleRX with Bridgette Raes
Style expert Bridgette Raes wants the “everyday woman” to know that our bodies aren’t wrong for our clothes, our clothes are wrong for our bodies. She’ the author of Style RX and she joined me on Amy’s Table to share her top 5 tips for looking great
1- Your body isn’t wrong for the clothing, the clothing is wrong for your body.
When we try on clothing that doesn’t fit us well, we immediately start castigating ourselves, thinking that we need to lose weight or that there is something wrong with our bodies. Instead of putting the blame on yourself, put it on the clothes instead. This simple shift in perspective can be very empowering.
2- Don’t Wishful Wardrobe
Wishful wardrobing means buying clothing for the life you wish you had, not the one you currently do. It may be fun to have a closet full of stiletto heels, but if your life doesn’t call for them, they just sit there collecting dust. Buy realistically for your life and you’ll save money and the frustration that can come with a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear.
3- Where Are You Going In That?
This is a saying that can make or break your wardrobe. The next time you go shopping and want to buy something that you love, ask yourself “Where am I going in this?” before you purchase it. If you can’t come up with somewhere you can realistically wear it then it has no business going home with you.
4- Your closet tells on you: Messy Closet, Messy Life
Some people say the eyes are the window to the soul, but I believe the closet is. How you manage your wardrobe is usually indicative of how you manage your life. A messy closet usually indicates chaos in life, a closet full of clothes that aren’t in good shape usually indicates that you can use a little more self care, a closet that is stuffed with cheap shoddy purchases usually indicates that you may not put enough value on yourself and a closet full of sentimental items often means that you may be stuck in the past and need to let go.
5- Avoid “Chicken Outfits”
Few women are fashion nightmares buy many feel blah in their wardrobe. The reason is that they get dressed only 75% of the way. I call boring outfits ‘chicken outfits.’ Like chicken, your basics need to be accented with something to make them tasty. Your style rut is equivalent to throwing chicken into a pot of boiling water and just eating it…blech! It’s edible, but it sure isn’t exciting. Like spices, the best way to pump your basics up is through your accessories. Don’t forget that last 25% to give your basic outfits flavor.
