Pitching for Success: Character Lessons, The Joe Nuxhall Way with Doug Coates
Cincinnatian Doug Coates joined me on Amy’s Table to chat about his new book, Pitching for Success: Character Lessons, the Joe Nuxhall Way. It tells the story of one little league pitcher who learns about the game on the field, and learns life and character lessons along the way.
Check out these reviews from former Red Sean Casey and Joe Nuxhall’s son Kim:
“A terrific story matched with a terrific man. Pitching for Success is the perfect book for teaching young boys and girls the character traits Cincinnati Reds pitcher and broadcaster Joe Nuxhall lived by. Young Dominic, like Joe, has a good heart.”
—Sean Casey, former Cincinnati Reds first baseman
“Oh how Dad would have loved this story.”
The story follows Dominic Perez, the lead pitcher for the Firebirds, who hasn’t been throwing strikes. In fact, he’s given away a double and a homerun. His confidence is down, and he worries that his father, the team’s head coach, will pull him out of the game…for good.
Dominic is about to learn an incredible lesson about hard work, sportsmanship, and the true meaning of baseball. Through his sister’s life-affirming first game at the Miracle League Fields, and his father’s stories about famed Reds pitcher and sports broadcaster, Joe Nuxhall, Dominic discovers that it’s not about the perfect game: it’s about being a good team member, brother, student, and friend—on the field and off.
“His Dad had told him, ‘Don’t close your mind. Keep your options open. Don’t just work for yourself but work to help others less fortunate than you.’ So many possibilities. So many ways to realize a dream.”
Doug Coates weaves character lessons from Joe Nuxhall’s life and career through a sweet, fictional story perfect for young readers. Whether it’s read and discussed in the classroom, at home before Tuesday night’s softball game, or within a group of friends and teammates, Pitching for Success will educate, entertain, and inspire.
Doug coached little league baseball, girls’ softball, and girls’ high school fast-pitch softball for over twenty years. In addition to writing children’s books, he writes grants for nonprofits and volunteers for the Joe Nuxhall Miracle League Fields in Fairfield, Ohio. Doug resides in Hamilton, Ohio, and still plays men’s softball once a week in the summer. He is available for school presentations and readings.
