How to: Make a Terrarium
Tovah Martin is the author of The New Terrarium. She joined me on my radio show and explained that a terrarium is one of the easiest forms of gardening. After all, there’s no real estate required!
The images and ideas in Tovah’s book really inspired me- I loved the terrarium shown on her bedside table so much that I made one for my own bedside table. It’s the first thing I see when I open my eyes in the morning.
You can perk up any space with a terrarium. Here’s how:
1. Select a container: closed containers require the least maintenance. I used large apothecary jars but you can use Wardian cases, cloches or any decorative container.
2. Select your plants: most any plant will work- no cacti or succulents, though. For the best appearance, don’t overcrowd them.
3. Prepare the container: Layer an inch or so of gravel mixed with activated charcoal (available at garden supply or aquarium stores), topped with 2-inches of potting soil (light African violet soil works well)
4. Place the plants: firm them in
5. Add little bits of nature: sticks, stones, seed pods really add something special
6. Add water: just a bit
7. Enjoy the beauty of your terrarium!
